Importance Sorting: Prioritize NOTAMs by Operational Impact
12/29/2025
We've introduced a new sorting option called Importance that automatically prioritizes NOTAMs based on their operational impact. Instead of sorting by date or category, Importance sorting uses our AI-extracted Affected Elements to surface the most critical notices first.
How It Works
When you select "Importance" from the sort dropdown, NOTAMs are ordered based on a carefully designed priority hierarchy. The sorting considers both the type of element affected (Aerodrome, Runway, Approach, etc.) and the effect (Closed, Unserviceable, Restricted, Work In Progress).
The Importance Hierarchy
NOTAMs are ranked in the following order, from most critical to least:
| Priority | Affected Element | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Aerodrome | Closed / Unserviceable |
| 2 | Aerodrome | Restricted / Work In Progress |
| 3 | Runway | Closed / Unserviceable |
| 4 | Approach | Closed / Unserviceable |
| 5 | Procedure | Closed / Unserviceable |
| 6 | Runway | Restricted / Work In Progress |
| 7 | Service | Closed / Unserviceable |
| 8 | Approach | Restricted / Work In Progress |
| 9 | Procedure | Restricted / Work In Progress |
| 10 | Service | Restricted / Work In Progress |
| 11 | Taxiway | Closed / Unserviceable / Restricted / Work In Progress |
| 12 | Lighting | Closed / Unserviceable / Restricted / Work In Progress |
| 13 | All other NOTAMs | - |
Why This Order?
The hierarchy reflects real-world operational priorities:
- Aerodrome closures are the most critical as they affect the entire airport
- Runway closures directly impact aircraft operations
- Approach and procedure unavailability affects flight planning and alternates
- Service disruptions may require operational adjustments
- Taxiway and lighting issues are important but typically have workarounds
Within the same importance level, NOTAMs are sorted by date (most recent first).
Powered by Atomic Elements
Importance sorting leverages Notamify's Atomic Elements technology. Our AI extracts structured data from each NOTAM, identifying:
- Type: What infrastructure or service is affected
- Identifier: The specific element (e.g., RWY 09L, TWY A)
- Effect: The nature of the impact (Closed, Restricted, etc.)
- Details: Additional context when available
This structured extraction enables precise sorting that would be impossible with raw NOTAM text alone.
How to Use
- Navigate to any airport's NOTAM list
- Click the sort dropdown (default: "Most Recent")
- Select "Importance"
NOTAMs will instantly reorder to show the most operationally critical notices at the top.
Best Use Cases
Importance sorting is particularly valuable for:
- Pre-flight briefings: Quickly identify NOTAMs that may affect your operation
- Dispatch operations: Prioritize review of critical restrictions
- Airport monitoring: Surface significant changes across multiple airports
- Time-critical decisions: When you need to assess operational impact quickly
