FIR/UIR Support and Advanced Filtering: Taming the NOTAM Tsunami
11/21/2024
When Mexico announced via NOTAM that they've hit NOTAM number 9999 for 2024, it highlighted a growing challenge in aviation: information overload. That's right - they needed a NOTAM to tell us they're running out of NOTAM numbers. If that doesn't perfectly capture the current state of NOTAM management, I don't know what does.

The NOTAM Tsunami Is Real
Let's put this in perspective:
- Mexico: 9999 NOTAMs in less than a year
- USA: Average of 1,300 active NOTAMs daily
- Europe: Over 35,000 NOTAMs active at any given time
This isn't just a numbers game - it's a real safety concern. When critical information is buried under thousands of NOTAMs, something needs to change. That's why we're excited to announce our enhanced FIR support and smart filtering capabilities.
Full FIR Support: Because Operations Don't End at Airports
Flight Information Regions (FIRs) are where most en-route NOTAMs live. Yet, many NOTAM tools treat them as an afterthought. We've changed that.
What's New:
- Complete FIR Coverage: Access NOTAMs for any FIR worldwide
- Smart Grouping: Related NOTAMs are automatically grouped
Smart Filtering: Because You Don't Need All 9999 NOTAMs

Our new filtering system is built for the real world:
Location Filters
- Airports: Search by ICAO code
- FIRs: Full Flight Information Region support
Time-Based Filters
- Date Range: Focus on specific time periods
- Active NOTAMs: See what's relevant now
- Future NOTAMs: Plan ahead with upcoming notices
AI-Powered Categories
Our AI analyzes the full context of each NOTAM and categorizes them into intuitive groups:
- Aerodrome Operations: Runway, taxiway, and apron activities
- Airspace: Restrictions, changes, and military activity
- Navigation: Navaids, approach procedures, and route changes
- Communication: Radio frequencies and ATS updates
- Operations: Flight procedures and restrictions
- Obstacles: Construction, cranes, and temporary obstacles
- Administrative: Office hours and publication updates
- Weather: Services and equipment status
- Safety: Security measures and advisories

Real-World Impact
Let's look at how this works in practice. A flight from MMMX to KJFK previously required checking:
- Departure airport NOTAMs
- Arrival airport NOTAMs
- Alternate airports NOTAMs
- En-route FIR NOTAMs (MMFR, KZHU, KZMA)
- Possibly hundreds of NOTAMs
Now with Notamify:
- Enter your airports and FIRs
- Set your date range
- Filter by relevant categories
- Get a clean, relevant briefing
What used to take 30+ minutes now takes seconds. More importantly, you're less likely to miss critical information because it's not buried under irrelevant NOTAMs.
The Numbers Don't Lie
In testing with professional pilots:
- 83% reduction in briefing time
- 92% found critical NOTAMs faster
- 95% reported feeling more confident about not missing important information
