New NOTAM Cards: Faster Readability with Category + Effect Colors

10/3/2025

We’ve refreshed NOTAM cards to make them faster to scan and easier to understand.

  • The top bar now reflects the highest-severity effect when available (for example, CLOSED or RESTRICTED), so the operational impact is instantly recognizable.
  • The bar also incorporates the NOTAM’s category color, letting you perceive both the domain (e.g., Aerodrome, Navigation, Obstacles) and the effect at a glance.

What changed in detail

We redesigned the card header to prioritize decision-making speed:

  • Highest-severity effect color takes precedence, updating instantly as affected elements are parsed.
  • Category color is preserved as a secondary cue, so you can place the NOTAM within the right operational context at a glance.
  • The design remains compact and readable on both list and detail views.

Why it matters:

  • You can quickly assess the severity and type without opening details.
  • Colors are consistent across the app and align with our affected elements view.

This change reduces cognitive load and helps you identify critical notices faster, especially when triaging many NOTAMs.

How to read the colors

  • Effect (e.g., CLOSED, UNSERVICEABLE, RESTRICTED, HAZARD) communicates operational restriction and urgency.
  • Category (e.g., Aerodrome, Navigation, Obstacles) communicates scope and system domain.
  • Together, they make scanning large NOTAM sets much more efficient.
